Jason Gavern was born on October 15, 1974, in Houston, Texas. He is the son of a high school football coach and started boxing at age 11. Gavern won the 1989 National AAU championship as an amateur and turned pro in 1990.

In 1993, he beat undefeated fighter Joe Lipsey to win the USBA cruiserweight championship. From there he went on to fight in various other boxing organizations such as International Boxing Organization (IBO) and World Boxing Association (WBA). In 2000, he lost to Roy Jones Jr., who was ranked as one of the best pound-for-pound boxers of all time.
