Fujita was born on November 7, 1954, in Tokyo. He started boxing at the age of 15 and became a professional boxer in 1974. He won the WBA World Featherweight title in 1986 by defeating Thai fighter Khaokor Galaxy via unanimous decision.

In 1992, he was convicted of murder after being involved as one of the yakuza members that beat up a rival gang member and left him to die. He served 5 years and 3 months before being released on parole in 1997.
